What Does A Virtual Assistant Do In 2024? Marketing, Operations, Or Tech-Related Services!

There are so many different definitions of what a Virtual Assistant does and what they are, that it can be confusing. However one trend is clear, the type of services VAs offer are not admin-based anymore. The industry is moving toward Marketing, Operations, and Delivery to support their clients’ businesses virtually.

A Virtual Assistant Is NOT…

  • An employee.
  • A bot.
  • A piece of technology.
  • Or just admin assistants.

Virtual Assistants Are…

The 3 Types Of Services VAs Mainly Offer

Well in a nutshell they support business owners virtually. I know not much of a definition. The VA Industry is the support backbone for the online business industry whether it’s a one-person shop or a corporation. What VAs do for their clients really falls into three main skill categories.

  • Marketing: Make clients’ money.
  • Operations: Run a client’s business.
  • Delivery: Implementing the technology that delivers a client’s goods and services.

A Few Examples For Each Category

Each of these categories is what I call in-demand services. Admin services are no longer considered in-demand due to the fact that clients can do their own admin work but many can’t manage the technology that makes their business possible.

Now I’m not saying that you can’t find work as an admin, you can. It’s just that the industry is moving away from being only admin-based. I’ve had people approach me and say they never thought about being a VA because they thought it was all about being an admin. That’s not the case anymore.

#1 – Marketing

This category is focused on all the ways you can make your clients money. And if you can make your clients money you’ll never run out of clients. Anything in the digital marketing space would fall under this skills category.

  • Websites.
  • Sales funnels.
  • Social media.
  • Content marketing.
  • Email marketing.
  • Paid ads.

#2 – Operations

This category focuses on helping clients run their businesses, essentially the day-to-day stuff that needs to get done. The stuff behind the curtain so to speak. It’s all about systems and even managing a team to make sure that everything is running smoothly so the business owner can go do what they do.

  • Online business managers (OBM).
  • Admin type tasks: Calendar management, Inbox management.
  • Customer services.

#3 – Delivery

This category focuses on delivering a client’s goods and services using technology. It’s all about using technology to deliver your clients’ content to their audience.

  • Kajabi.
  • Ontraport.
  • Wishlist.
  • Aweber.
  • Teachable.

Remember, my motto. Your business, your choice. You can offer anything you want in your business. But if you’re looking to earn great money and work when and where you want it might be time to specialize in any of the three categories I’ve mentioned. Before I forget, I also have an Ultimate VA Success Guide: 4 Truths About The Most In-Demand VA Services that goes into much more detail about this topic. Make sure you have a look.

What kind of services do you offer? I’d love to know! All comments and questions are welcome.

    Hi Susan,
I know you started with PM, Ontraport and Shopping Cart. If you can choose 3 services today, which ones would you choose?

Hey Laura, thanks for the comment and great questions. For me it would be WordPress, PM and Tech Stack offers. Hope that helps.
